After twenty-six years at home and thirteen years as the artistic director of the Alexander McQueen brand, the English designer announces his departure.

On September 30, 2023, he will present his last collection in Paris. And it will mark the end of twenty-six years of cooperation. Sarah Burton thus turns the page of Alexander McQueen. This departure was announced in a press release from Kering Group, the owner of the brand. “We would like to express our immense gratitude to Sarah for writing such an important chapter in the history of the House of Alexander McQueen. Sarah’s contribution over the past 26 years will leave an indelible mark,” said CEO Gianfilippo Testa.

Joining Alexander McQueen as an intern in 1996 at the age of 21, Sarah Burton initially found a discreet place behind the glamor of Alexander McQueen. He recognizes her unfailing loyalty. Very quickly the British mission grew. In 2000, he was appointed director of the ready-to-wear studio. Then in 2010, he became the artistic director of the house of Alexander McQueen. A role he reluctantly accepted, still marked by the February 2010 suicide of his mentor and dear friend, designer Alexander McQueen, who killed himself the day before his mother’s funeral. But the designer goes to work to perpetuate the legacy.

Burton’s signature would appear in the media in 2011 thanks to the royal wedding dress she designed for Kate Middleton. The dress made of cord lace transformed the aura of the two women. The Duchess of Cambridge became the future queen, the world-famous designer Sarah Burton, who is able to modernize the brand while preserving the legacy of its founder. Popularity he will never use. Season after season, it continues the poetic, dark and technical work inherited from its founder, bringing its breath, more delicate, brighter and softer, but no less powerful, to the women’s wardrobe.
