The contract for the purchase of the IRIS-T anti-aircraft system will be the largest in the history of Latvia and Estonia.

Latvian Defense Minister Inara Murniece, together with Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur, signed a major agreement with Germany for the purchase of the IRIS-T air defense system produced by the German company Diehl Defense. The Latvian Ministry of Defense reported this on Monday, September 11.

“The experience of Ukraine shows the importance of a modern air defense system, which until now the National Armed Forces have only a short range. In turn, the IRIS-T system will allow for effective and comprehensive defense in the middle range, it is also compatible with NATO systems, So, the benefit is not only for Latvia, but also for the whole region,” said Murniece.

It is reported that the contract for the purchase of IRIS-T will be the largest in the history of Latvia and Estonia. The joint acquisition of one type of system will allow Latvia and Estonia to save money and also facilitate mutual coordination of regional defense.

The agreement states that the purchase will be implemented within three years. Before this, Latvia still needs to carry out large-scale work to train personnel and improve infrastructure.

We remind you that Germany has already provided Ukraine with two IRIS-T systems. They are mainly used to protect Kyiv from Russian missile attacks. German complexes break efficiency at 100%.
