The President of the Russian Federation is entitled under the constitution to two more terms, which would allow him to remain in power until he is 83 years old.
Russia’s ruling party will claim a resounding victory in the Sept. 10 election that ends Sunday. It is simultaneously an attempt to re-elect Russian President Vladimir Putin next year and strengthen control over the four occupied territories in Ukraine, writes Bloomberg.
Residents of 85 regions vote in elections for a range of regional and municipal positions. Russian authorities are also organizing local pseudo-elections in the occupied territories of four Ukrainian regions – Zaporozhye, Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson regions.
The publication notes that the elections allow the Russian regime to hone voter turnout and lay the groundwork to ensure Putin’s victory in the presidential elections in March 2024. A resounding victory would show that he has retained his country’s full support amid the war in Ukraine and following the uprising of Wagner PMC leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, the biggest challenge of his nearly 25-year rule.
“The Kremlin needs to review how the process of preparing for Putin’s re-election in 2024, where the goal is to show the unity of the society around him despite the war and the economic crisis, due to the high number of voters ,” said a senior fellow at the Europe, Russia and Eurasia Center for Strategic and International Studies Maria Snegova.
The Russian leader, who unleashed Europe’s worst armed conflict since World War II when he invaded Ukraine, is poised to surpass the nearly 30-year rule of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. This will happen if he receives a new six-year mandate.
“Although Putin has not yet announced whether he will stand for re-election, he is constitutionally entitled to two more terms, which would allow him to remain in power until he is 83 years old,” the agency wrote.
We remind you that on September 10, the occupation authorities are holding local “elections” in the occupied territories of Ukraine. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine called on residents of the temporarily occupied territories to ignore participation in the pseudo-election and avoid conscription in the occupation army. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry initiated an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and the introduction of new sanctions against the Russian Federation.
