NATO naval exercises Northern Coasts 2023 began off the coast of Latvia and Estonia. The German Navy announced this, under the leadership of maneuvers, on Saturday, September 9.
About 3,200 military personnel, 30 ships and boats, and up to 19 aircraft from 14 countries are involved in the exercises.
The Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy, Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack, explained that as part of the exercise, joint actions will be carried out to repel a possible Russian attack in the region.
“We are sending Russia a clear signal of (our) caution,” he said in early September. At the same time, the vice admiral emphasized that “credible deterrence must include the ability to attack.”
As part of the exercises, landing operation exercises and ship strikes against land targets will be conducted in the coastal areas of Latvia and Estonia, as well as actions to ensure the security of Baltic sea routes.
The exercises included naval forces from Germany, the United States, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada and Sweden.
A day before it became known that Romania, the United States and Ukraine will conduct exercises in the Black Sea and Danube Delta. Their goal is to develop compatibility between participating countries in the field of countering explosive ordnance.
