Gepard plus machine gun: how Ukraine will protect the energy system

Attacks on energy infrastructure may begin in late September or early October.

Ukraine plans to defend its power grids from Russian UAV attacks using the German Gepard air defense system and heavy machine guns such as the American M2 Browning. Reuters reported this in its material published on Thursday, September 7.

The agency quoted the commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Sergei Naev, as saying that the German Gepard air defense systems, which have a radar with a radius of 12 km, are on defense. However, this was not enough to cover the entire country, so heavy machine guns such as the American M2 Browning filled the gaps.

According to Naev, the enemy has not abandoned his criminal intentions to hit critical infrastructure facilities and cause damage to Ukraine and its economy. Last winter there were fewer air defense systems. Now the military has been given more of them, so the effectiveness will be better.

In this regard, Vadim Skibitsky, deputy head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, said last week that Moscow may begin using more Shahed along with missiles to mislead Ukraine’s air defenses.

According to him, Russia’s attack on the energy infrastructure could begin in late September or early October.

According to Samuel Bendett, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, Ukraine is well prepared for new drone strikes. But due to the fact that their number is constantly growing, a problem may arise. He believes that Russia will launch more drones, but not many: “Russia is still far from its intended goal of producing thousands of these drones.”

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said Russia launched about 2,000 missiles last month.

Military analysts estimate that the Shaheds cost about $20,000 each, while the Western-supplied air defense missiles used by Kyiv last winter cost many times that. Naev said Gepard anti-aircraft weapons cost less than $1,000 per round, making them more effective.

We remind you that Germany has already transferred 46 Gepard installations to Ukraine. Six more should arrive soon.

Naev spoke about Gepard’s work in the Zhytomyr region
