The White House’s request for more aid to Ukraine is supported by both parties in the US Senate. At the same time, there are opponents in the House of Representatives.
American senators from both parties have called for the approval of an additional $24 billion in aid to Ukraine in the near future. The White House previously sent a corresponding request to Congress, Voice of America reports.
We are talking about an additional $24 billion in military, economic and humanitarian support for Ukraine, reflecting a full-scale Russian invasion.
As the leader of the Democrats in the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, noted, it is necessary to show the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and “the forces of autocracy that the United States has unwavering support for Ukraine.”
According to him, today is a turning point.
“The worst thing we can do for our national security and democratic values at this time is to weaken or doubt our support,” Schumer said.
According to Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, it is very important to show the people of Ukraine that “we are with them for the long haul.”
“They’ve made a lot of progress now. The last week has been really positive in terms of breaking through the Russian defense lines. I’m sure the minister will now get an update on what Ukraine needs. And hopefully he will inform them. that the current administration will do everything to provide additional funds to Ukraine,” he emphasized.
In this regard, the Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell also made a strong statement in support of Ukraine.
Another representative of the Republican Party in the Senate, Mitt Romney, expressed the opinion that it is important for the American side to talk to the people of Ukraine and remind them that “we fully support their efforts to fight for freedom and sovereignty.”
At the same time, in the House of Representatives the idea of allocating additional funds to Ukraine found slightly less support. There, a small group of congressmen oppose it.
Let’s remember that the previous day, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced US aid for Ukraine in the amount of more than one billion US dollars.
