On the German side, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and Rheinmetall will be responsible for developing the new main tank, the sources said.
Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden have signed agreements to develop a new tank to replace the Leopard 2. This was reported by the newspaper Handelsblatt, citing sources on Wednesday, September 6th.
On the German side, Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Rheinmetall are said to be responsible for developing the new main tank. At the same time, they both refused to comment on information about the contract. The German Ministry of Defense also did not comment.
Swedish company Saab and Italian company Leonardo are also involved in the project, sources said. Which company will represent Spain is still unknown.
The publication recalls that this agreement may affect relations between France and Germany, as a similar agreement on the development of a new tank was signed in 2017. Moreover, in July of this year, both sides expressed their desire to “breathe new life” into the signed agreement. However, so far the countries have not agreed on the characteristics of the tank. France wanted a reasonably light vehicle, while Germany planned to develop a heavier tank.
Recall that at the end of August, Ukraine received from Germany 10 Leopard 1 tanks and four transporters for armored vehicles.
