The UK’s National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), in collaboration with international partners, has published a report on a malware campaign targeting Android mobile devices used by members of the Defense Forces. This was announced by the British Ministry of Defense on Twitter.
Intelligence notes that malware called Infamous Chisel was used by a Russian cybercriminal group known as Sandworm. The British believe that this software was developed by the Main Center for Special Technologies of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation.
The summary says that Infamous Chisel provides constant access to compromised Android devices, as well as their processing and filtering. This includes targeting applications that are used by military personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The Infamous Chisel was most likely used to steal sensitive military information. This activity demonstrates the use of cyber capabilities by Russia to support the invasion of Ukraine, the British department notes.
Recall that in the spring, Russian hackers stepped up attacks on the local authorities of Ukraine. Gospetssvyaz stated that this indicates not only that this segment is of interest to hackers, but also that local authorities still remain insufficiently protected from the enemy, which is usually due to a lack of funds and specialists.
