The reach and influence of Kremlin-backed accounts increased further in the first half of 2023, in part due to the loosening of Twitter’s security standards.
Reforms implemented by businessman Elon Musk in the social network X (Twitter) help increase the reach of Russian propaganda. This is stated in a study published by the European Commission, reports the BBC.
“Previous analysis shows that the reach and influence of Kremlin-backed accounts increased further in the first half of 2023, in part due to the removal of Twitter’s security standards,” said Reset, a non -profit analytics group, in a study.
At the same time, the study found that the policies of companies such as Telegram and Meta, which own Instagram and Facebook, also proved ineffective in limiting Russian disinformation.
“In 2022, the audience and reach of pro-Kremlin social media accounts increased significantly across Europe,” the report said.
It was noted that the accounts supported by the Russian Federation and not blocked in the European Union have at least 165 million subscribers, and in 2022 they were checked at least 16 billion times.
In absolute numbers, pro-Kremlin accounts continue to reach the largest audience on Meta platforms, the report notes. Meanwhile, the audience size of Kremlin-backed Telegram accounts has more than tripled.
It was previously reported that the social network X (Twitter) is bringing back political advertising.
