The Nobel Foundation canceled the presence of the ambassadors of Russia, Belarus and Iran at the banquet, which traditionally takes place in Stockholm at the end of the year on the occasion of the Nobel Prizes, reports the BBC.
The organization said the foundation’s decision to invite representatives of all countries whose diplomatic missions are represented in Sweden and Norway to the ceremony caused a strong public reaction.
In particular, sharp criticism was made in Ukraine, and in Sweden, the leaders of at least three political parties said they would boycott the banquet if the invitation to the ambassadors of these countries was not withdrawn.
It was noted that invitations from Russia, Belarus and Iran also questioned the appearance at the banquet of the King of Sweden, who is always present every year. Representatives of the Swedish royal family called the invitation surprising, adding that the king reflected on how appropriate it was for him to be at the event with such guests.
Recall that earlier the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that the decision of the Nobel Foundation to continue the practice of inviting the ambassadors of Russia and Belarus to the Nobel Prize ceremony will only increase the sense of impunity of the Russian Federation.
