Symptoms range from mild (headache, fever, muscle discomfort, red eyes, diarrhea, rash) to severe (kidney damage, liver damage, meningitis).
In Transcarpathia, in the community of Perechyn, one person died as a result of infection with a dangerous infectious disease. As Ivan Pogorilyak, mayor of Perechin, explained on Thursday, August 31, on Facebook, we are talking about leptospirosis.
“As a result of the outbreak of leptospirosis in the territory of the settlement of Perechyn, one person has already died,” he said.
Pogorelyak urged local residents to follow hygiene rules and follow the advice of infectious disease specialists.
Leptospirosis is known as a dangerous infectious disease caused by the bacterium Leptospira. If left untreated, leptospirosis can lead to kidney and liver damage, meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord), and death.
You can get leptospirosis while swimming in contaminated bodies of water, fishing, making hay in wet areas, while caring for sick and infected animals, etc.
The bacterium leptospirosis enters the human body through cracks, cuts or wounds in the skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth). Signs of the disease may appear two to four weeks after infection.
Symptoms of leptospirosis include:
-
heat;
-
headache;
-
trembling;
-
muscle pain;
-
vomiting and diarrhea;
-
jaundice;
-
redness of the eyes;
-
rash
To prevent the disease, rodents should be exterminated, pets should be vaccinated against leptospirosis, and contact with potentially contaminated water should be avoided.
Earlier in July, in the Kirovograd region, a man died of leptospirosis, the diagnosis was confirmed by laboratory tests. A resident of the Bobrinetsky district sought medical help too late, when the disease had already taken a serious form.
In Lviv, a 54-year-old man died of leptospirosis. The source of infection is probably rats.
