The US State Department has approved $80 million worth of military aid to Taiwan, to be paid from the US budget.
In the United States, the Joe Biden administration approved funding for the first transfer of military equipment to Taiwan, under a program typically used for sovereign states. This was reported by CNN.
It was noted that under the Foreign Military Operations Financing (FMF) program, the US State Department approved providing military assistance to Taiwan in the amount of $80 million, to be paid from the US budget.
According to a State Department spokesman, the approval of military aid does not mean a change in the “one China” policy.
However, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted sharply to the news, urging the United States to “stop strengthening US-Taiwan military ties and arming Taiwan” and “stop creating tension across the Taiwan Strait. “
The US has already sold weapons to Taiwan, but under a separate Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. Under a law passed last year, the US government is authorized to spend up to $2 billion annually in military aid to Taiwan from 2023 to 2027.
It was previously reported that US President Joe Biden’s administration approved the sale to Taiwan of a new package of weapons and military equipment worth $500 million.
Remember that in the British Parliament for the first time Taiwan was called an independent country.
