The allies took actions in accordance with the scenario of a North Korean ballistic missile launch. Three destroyers participated in the maneuvers.
South Korea, the US and Japan conducted joint anti-missile exercises in international waters south of the Korean Peninsula. This was reported on August 29 by the Yonhap agency.
The maneuvers are said to be the allies’ response to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. They occurred after Pyongyang’s attempt to launch a Chollima-1 ballistic missile with a military spy satellite, which was unsuccessful.
According to the South Korean Navy, three destroyers equipped with American-made Aegis anti-missile systems participated in the exercise: the South Korean Yulgok Yi I, the American USS Benfold and the Japanese JS Haguro.
Under the scenario of a North Korean ballistic missile launch, the exercise focused on refining methods for identifying and tracking a computer-simulated target and sharing relevant information.
The military has also tested data sharing as part of efforts to create an integrated DPRK real-time missile launch warning system, which is set to become operational before the end of the year.
The countries last conducted missile defense exercises in July.
