Sources of journalists in British intelligence have information about the involvement of an employee of the Main Intelligence Directorate in the liquidation of the head of PMC Wagner.
GRU Major General Andrey Averyanov, who was also allegedly responsible for the Salisbury poisoning in 2018, may have been involved in the death of Wagner PMC founder Yevgeny Prigozhin. About this on Friday, August 25, writes innews, citing British intelligence sources.
Averyanov is said to be the head of GRU unit 29155. It has been described by The New York Times and Bellingcat as a covert GRU unit for sabotage operations in Europe, including the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his son which is Yulia in 2018.
Two British intelligence sources said Averyanov led an operation to replace Wagner PMC mercenaries in African countries with 20,000 Russian troops and had a “long-standing hostile relationship” with Prigozhin. The Financial Times, citing several informed sources, reported that before his death, Prigozhin visited Africa, where he tried to prevent the GRU from taking control of its operations. WSJ contacts said that a month earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin recommended that the President of the Central African Republic distance himself from PMC founder Wagner.
At the same time, Western officials continue to believe that the Russian president is likely behind Prigozhin’s death. “Not much happens in Russia without Putin’s involvement,” said US President Joe Biden.
“Historically, Putin prefers” cold “revenge. So the manner and time of Prigozhin’s death is not surprising. Many, including me, thought that his days were numbered. There was a lot of talk in the aforementioned name (Averyanov). This is also not surprising,” said a former British intelligence employee.
According to Russian propagandists, the cause of the plane crash, which PMC founder Wagner Yevgeny Prigozhin may have been a “terrorist attack”.
