At the briefing, Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said the US would be taught to fly and maintain aircraft.
He noted that the exact number of Ukrainians who will study is still unknown, but it is expected that it will be several pilots and dozens of service personnel.
Training will reportedly begin in October at Morris National Guard Base in Tucson, Arizona.
Ryder stressed that American training would complement similar efforts by Washington’s allies in Europe.
CNN writes that Ukraine has submitted a list of about 32 pilots ready to start fighter jet training, but most of them do not yet speak English well enough.
The pilots, along with personnel who will be trained to operate the aircraft, could arrive in the US as early as September, one of the officials said. It is not yet clear how long pilot training will take.
It’s also unclear where Ukrainian pilots will be trained, but officials have said one option could be Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tuscon, Arizona. In March, the base accepted an internship for two Ukrainian pilots to see how quickly they could learn to fly the F-16.
