All BRICS countries have disagreements over issues in the Indo-Pacific region and the war in Ukraine, the White House said.
The US administration does not consider BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) as a geopolitical rival. This is what Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Jake Sullivan said in an online briefing on Tuesday, August 22.
He was asked if Washington was concerned that the BRICS could “threaten the United States economically, geopolitically.”
“We don’t see BRICS as something that could evolve from some geopolitical rival of the United States or something. It’s a very diverse group of countries in its current form – Brazil, India, South Africa are democracies, while Russia and China are autocracies,” Sullivan said.
According to him, all BRICS countries have disagreements on the most important issues in the Indo-Pacific region, on the war in Ukraine, and on some other issues.
It will be remembered that the 15th BRICS summit started in South Africa, it will be held until August 24. The President of Russia Vladimir Putin did not come to this meeting because of a warrant from the International Criminal Court. The Kremlin leader plans to participate in the summit remotely.
At the same time, the Presidents of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, China – Xi Jinping, Brazil – Lula da Silva and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi are participating in the current summit.
The main issues of discussion at the summit were the expansion of BRICS and the increase in the use of local currencies of member countries in negotiations among themselves.
