Due to a forest fire, the Dardanelles are closed to shipping in the direction of the Sea of Marmara.
Turkey on Tuesday, August 22, closed the Dardanelles to the passage of ships due to a forest fire in the region. About that reported Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey on social network X.
“Due to a forest fire in the Canakkale-Kepez region, the movement of ships in the Dardanelles in the south-north direction is temporarily suspended. The movement of ships is carried out in one direction,” the ministry said in a statement.
Thus, ships were temporarily unable to cross the strait from the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara. The ministry sent boats with water cannons to the fire zone to help extinguish the fire from water.
A large fire broke out in a forest in Canakkale near the Dardanelles on the afternoon of August 22. Authorities have already evacuated four villages. 15 helicopters, eight amphibious aircraft and a large number of ground equipment are engaged in the fire.

The risk of further spread of the fire remains due to strong winds in the region, which also complicates measures to localize and extinguish the fire. There were no reports of casualties or deaths.
The Dardanelles Strait connects the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara, and with the Bosphorus, the Black Sea. It is an important route for the courts.
Recall that the fire on the island of Tenerife destroyed 6.7% of the island’s surface and destroyed almost a third (27.6%) of the forests.
