Ukrainian pilots will receive fighter jets immediately after completing training. Washington supports both the training of Ukrainian pilots and the transfer of aircraft.
The United States has approved sending F-16 fighter jets from Denmark and the Netherlands to Ukraine after pilot training is completed. This was reported on Friday, August 18, by Reuters, citing an unnamed Washington official.
According to the agency, the United States has assured Denmark and the Netherlands that it will expedite the approval of all necessary F-16 transfer requests so that Ukrainian pilots can receive the fighters immediately after training is completed.
“I am writing to express the full support of the United States for both the transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine and the training of Ukrainian pilots by qualified F-16 instructors,” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a letter to his colleagues from Denmark and the Netherlands, a copy of which was received by journalists.
He added that this would allow Ukraine to “take full advantage of its new capabilities once the first group of pilots completes their training.”
The agency recalls that US President Joe Biden approved training programs for Ukrainian F-16 pilots in May, but the time of delivery of the aircraft has not yet been announced.
As reported, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in a briefing on August 17 that Ukrainian pilots will soon begin training on F-16 fighters. But for the transfer of aircraft to Ukraine, a separate decision is required, which has not yet been adopted.
