Germany will provide Ukraine with its most advanced air defense system IRIS-T. Also, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive multiple rocket launch systems, anti-battery radars and howitzers. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said this in a speech to the Bundestag, Reuters reported on Wednesday, June 1st.
“The government has decided that we will provide the most advanced air defense system that Germany has-IRIS-T,” Scholz said, adding that such an air defense system could protect a large city from attack. of the air of Russia.
In addition, Germany will provide Ukraine with modern radars for the detection of enemy artillery and mortars, as well as the MLRS in cooperation with the United States.
Scholz assured that in the near future Germany along with the Netherlands will provide Ukraine with 12 modern self-propelled howitzers. Ukrainian military training in handling these weapons will end in a few days. At the same time, the chancellor did not name specific delivery dates.
Scholz also expressed disapproval of the opposition’s claims that Germany was not helping Ukraine with arms.
“We have always been supplying since the beginning of the war. We have supplied more than 15 million ammunition, 100,000 hand grenades, more than 5,000 anti-tank mines,” the chancellor listed.
Scholz recalled that Germany also conducts arms exchanges with other EU countries: they provide Ukraine with old -style weapons, and Germany provides these states with more modern substitutes.
The IRIS-T SLM is a ground-based air defense system developed by German defense company Diehl Defense based on the MAN SX 45 (8×8) chassis with modified short-range air-to-air missiles IRIS-T with infrared homing head, equipped with a more powerful engine. The firing range from a vertical launcher is up to 40 km, the collapsed ceiling is 20 km. It can hit aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, rocket artillery, drones, anti-radar missiles and bombs.
