The interception system is designed for hypersonic missiles developed by China, Russia and North Korea.
Authorities in Japan and the United States are in talks to jointly develop a system to intercept hypersonic missiles developed by China, Russia and North Korea. On Sunday, August 13, Reuters reported in connection with the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri.
It was learned that an agreement on a system to intercept missiles that can bypass modern air defense systems is expected at a meeting between President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in the United States on Friday.
Unlike conventional ballistic warheads, which follow predictable trajectories, hypersonic projectiles can change course, making them more difficult to target.
Yomiuri reported that Biden and Kishida will meet on the sidelines of a trilateral summit with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol at the presidential residence in Maryland.
It will be recalled that in January, the United States and Japan agreed to consider developing systems to intercept hypersonic missiles in a meeting between Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin along with their Japanese counterparts, Foreign Minister Yoshimas Hayashi and Defense Secretary Yasukazu Hamada.
This agreement will be the second in the field of missile defense technology. Washington and Tokyo have already developed longer-range missiles designed to hit space-based warheads that Japan places on warships in the sea between Japan and the Korean Peninsula to defend against North Korean missile strikes.
