This was announced by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Oksana Markarova in an interview with LB.ua.
There is a big difference between what they write about the offensive in the press and how it is assessed in the US administration, in the State Department, in the Pentagon and in the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The assessment of the White House, Secretary of Defense Austin and the head of the Joint Staff Milley is quite positive, Markarova said.
Markarova noted that all American officials understand that the Ukrainian military is now conducting the most difficult operation since the Second World War and that Ukraine is confronted by a brutal and numerous aggressor.
The US authorities know that every advance, every liberated kilometer, every advance in all directions, and even the fact that we simply do not allow the Russians to advance further, is a huge success, the ambassador noted.
Markarova believes that, unfortunately, it cannot yet be said that the opinion that Russia must be stopped at any cost is winning in the United States, and all resources must be focused on ensuring that Ukraine wins, however, thanks to the courageous resistance of Ukrainian defenders and Kiev’s clear position “there has been a significant evolution in the views of the American elite in favor of Ukraine.”
In the United States, the number of experts who said that “the path must be given the opportunity to save face,” Markarova assures, adds that the number one task for Ukraine is to enlist America’s support in 2024.
She also said that on the way to the Washington summit there would be serious discussions about Ukraine’s membership in NATO.
According to her, most of Ukraine’s friends in the United States understand that our state’s entry into NATO is the only effective mechanism that ensures the security of both Ukraine and the entire region.
However, while we are in a state of active war, this greatly complicates the process of negotiations. Our position is simple: the strategic goal of Ukraine, which is voiced by President Zelensky, is supported by the people – this is Ukraine’s membership in NATO and the EU. We want to receive an invitation and talk about specific steps towards membership and reforms that we need to take,” Markarova said.
