Russian authorities want to nationalize Yandex before the elections – ISW

The Kremlin is pressuring Yandex to sell or distance itself from international subsidiaries in order to comply with Russian data disclosure laws.

The Putin regime in Russia is trying to nationalize Yandex to control the information space in the run-up to the presidential election. This was announced on Thursday, August 10, by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

It was noted that Yandex was probably trying to strike a balance between the Kremlin and its foreign authorities, but now it seems to be losing the battle with the Kremlin.

According to ISW, the Kremlin is pressuring Yandex to sell or distance itself from international subsidiaries, including taxi service Yango Israel, to comply with Russian data disclosure laws that require Yandex to hand over all of user data – not only users in Russia – in Russia. Federal Security Service.

The Russian government previously fined Yandex for failing to comply with this law, despite Yandex’s claims that it could not provide the requested data.

The Russian government has also previously fined Yandex CEO Artem Savinovsky for failing to comply with Russian censorship laws, possibly in an attempt to force Yandex to comply with Russian censorship laws not only in Russia but around the world in order to blow up the its global operations and user base.

IT company officials have previously said Yandex strives to comply with laws in each country where it operates and denounced Russia’s data collection efforts, saying they only provide user data to governments of the user in that particular country.

Several Russian insider sources have suggested that Alexei Kudrin, a corporate development adviser at Yandex, tried to turn Yandex into a national private company controlled by Putin’s personal banker, Yuri Kovalchuk.

Reuters said its sources at Yandex feared a “brain drain” if the Kremlin nationalized the company, as many of its employees fled Russia after the February 2022 mass invasion of Ukraine.

The Kremlin is likely aware of these concerns, as investors with ties to Kremlin officials, not Russian state institutions, recently filed bids to buy Yandex.

The possible transfer of Yandex to affiliates of Russia’s first deputy chief of staff, Sergei Kiriyenko, suggests that Putin seeks to reward Kiriyenko for his personal loyalty, especially after the June 24 Wagner rebellion.

Experts speculate that Putin is likely to reward Kiriyenko to further ensure his loyalty on the eve of the 2024 presidential election, especially since he is the Kremlin’s contact for matters and elections in occupied Ukraine.

It was previously reported that Uber has sold a third of its stake in Russian Yandex.Taxi.
