The UNESCO mission will prepare a comprehensive report on the damage caused in December – before the meeting of countries participating in the Hague Convention. Therefore, this report can be used as evidence in international courts.
UNESCO recommends adding St. Sophia Cathedral, the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and the historical center of Lviv on the list of endangered world heritage. This was announced on Tuesday, August 8, by the head of the UNESCO Office in Ukraine, Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi, in a briefing.
“UNESCO recently recommended the addition of new Ukrainian sites in need of protection to the list of World Heritage Sites in Danger. These are St. Sophia Cathedral and nearby monastery buildings, the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, as well as the group of the historical center of Lviv,” he said.
According to the head of UNESCO in Ukraine, the final decision will be made by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in September.
It should be noted, according to the estimates of the organization’s experts, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, on July 26, 274 cultural objects were damaged in Ukraine. We are talking about 117 religious sites, 27 museums, 19 monuments, 12 libraries, 1 archive, as well as 98 buildings of historical or artistic interest.
It will be remembered that on the night of July 23, the Russians hit the Odessa region with five types of missiles. Dozens of buildings in the center of Odessa were destroyed. 28 architectural monuments were damaged, including the Transfiguration Cathedral.
Then two people died, another 22 civilians were injured.
