Israel has decided to buy another 25 fifth-generation F-35 fighters from the United States to form a third squadron of these aircraft and bring their total fleet to 75. This was announced by the Israeli Ministry of Defense on Sunday , July 2 .
“The Israel Ministry of Defense and the Israel Defense Forces will acquire a third squadron of F-35 aircraft. The Ministry of Defense will purchase a total of 25 F-35 aircraft from the US government, which will be manufactured by Lockheed Martin . This acquisition will expand the fleet of these aircraft operated by the Israeli Air Force to 75”, the statement said.
The Ministry of Defense said that “the price of the deal is about $3 billion, it is financed from US aid funds.”
The Israeli Defense Mission to the United States is expected to send a formal letter of request to the Joint F-35 Program Office, which will facilitate the approval and signing of the agreement in the coming months.
It is known that in 2010 Israel decided to buy F-35 aircraft from the United States. The first two such fighters landed at Israel’s Nevatim base in December 2016. A year later, the army completed the acceptance procedure and announced the start of operational use of the fighters.
It was previously reported that Romania will acquire America’s fifth-generation F-35 fighter. The decision was made against the backdrop of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
