The emphasis was on counter-battery combat, but now the military needs information silence, Natalya Gumenyuk said.
Heavy fighting continues in the Kherson region near the Antonovsky bridge. Units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroy the Russian invaders. This is what the speaker of the Operational Command South Natalya Gumenyuk said on the air of the telethon on Sunday, July 2.
“Right now, powerful combat work is underway. The emphasis is on counter-battery combat, because the peculiarities of our front line in this zone are actually in the zone of the Dnieper River. Its channel has been somewhat deformed due to the disaster caused by the invaders due to blowing up the Kakhovka dam. This is a very complicated combat task,” he said.
According to Gumenyuk, 49 Russian invaders and 15 pieces of equipment were destroyed in the area in the past day. He added that now the military needs informational silence.
In this regard, the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believes that the Russian military command is increasingly concerned about the possible landing of Ukrainian troops on the left bank of the Dnieper in the Kherson region.
It is said that on July 1, Russian troops defeated small Ukrainian landing groups on the left bank of the Kherson region, which was presented as a major victory. But the Russian sources did not provide any evidence that they continued to control the coastal areas, and many of them reported that, on July 1, the operation was still ongoing in the areas adjacent to the Antonovsky Bridge .
ISW analysts believe that the Russian command is exaggerating the success in this direction because it is afraid of the Ukrainian attack on the eastern coast of the Kherson region, or it desperately needs information success after the armed rebellion of PMC Wagner, or both.
Earlier, information appeared about active battles in the area of the Antonovsky bridge. As if the Ukrainian military had occupied and held several positions on the left bank. This week, the Russians fired Iskander missiles at the eastern side of the Antonovsky Bridge, where Ukrainian fighters were hiding. But this did not help the aggressors to remove the bridgehead.
