According to the data of the Language Board, there are approximately 2500 teachers in Estonia who do not have sufficient knowledge of the Estonian language.
In Estonia, fines have been raised for teachers who still do not speak the state language and continue to use Russian while working. This was announced on Friday, June 30, by the coordinator of the transition to Estonian-language studies of the Ministry of Education Ingara Dubolazova, ERR reports.
He noted that if the teacher teaches in Russian, the school will be fined 10,000 euros.
“In addition, the Language Department will begin to check the level of Estonian language proficiency of teachers by attending their lessons,” Dubolazova said.
It was noted that the maximum amount of fines for non-compliance with the language requirements for teachers and schools reached 640 euros.
According to some Estonian politicians, the increase in fines is a good sign for city officials, many of whom do not understand the importance of education in Estonian.
It was previously reported that there are more than 500 sites for learning the Ukrainian language in Ukraine.
