The task of the UN mission is to assist the Malian authorities in strengthening security on the territory of the republic.
The United Nations Security Council decided on the complete withdrawal of the peacekeeping contingent from Mali. This was announced on Friday, June 30, according to Ukrinform.
It was mentioned that the work of the UN mission in Mali was suspended at the initiative of the country’s authorities.
The mission’s mandate ends on June 30. Its withdrawal will begin on July 1 and must be completed by December 31, 2023.
Until September 30, the mission will also maintain the duties of responding to threats to civilians and, together with the country’s authorities, will participate in ensuring security.
It was noted that in February 2023, the peacekeeping contingent in Mali reached more than 15 thousand people. More than 280 members of the Mali mission have died since its inception.
It is known that the UN peacekeeping contingent arrived in Mali in 2013, since then there have been several coups d’etat in the country, and now a military junta is in power, which opposes the peacekeepers.
Earlier, a convoy of the UN international peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA) was blown up on February 21 by an improvised explosive device.
