The US Treasury Department states that the Russians have been working for years to undermine democratic processes in the country.
The United States has imposed sanctions against Russian intelligence officials who tried to influence the country’s elections. This was said by the US Treasury Department, according to The Guardian.
The agency clarified that the sanctions were imposed against 31-year-old Yegor Popov and 49-year-old Alexei Sukhodolov, employees of the Russian FSB.
The Russians are accused of working to undermine democratic processes in the US and elsewhere through a network of conspirators.
Popov and Sukhodolov worked with Russian Alexander Ionov, who was accused by the US Department of Justice last year of years of work using political groups in Florida, Georgia and California to interfere in elections, the US Treasury Department said.
“The United States is not a threat to our democracy, and today’s action is based on a whole-of-government approach to protecting our system of representative government,” said Department spokesman Brian Nelson.
The US Treasury did not specify which elections Popov and Sukhodolov were trying to influence.
