Cumhuriyet TV explained that since Kilichdaroglu was running for president, he could not participate in the parliamentary elections that were taking place at the same time. As a result, he was left without parliamentary immunity.
According to the channel, Kilicdaroglu is generally threatened with up to 110 years in prison. Most of the lawsuits against the opposition leader concern the image of the incumbent President Erdogan.
Turkish political analysts consider it unlikely that the leader of the opposition will be brought to justice, as this could lead to destabilization of the political situation in the country.
The presidential elections in Turkey were held in mid-May 2023. In the first round, Erdogan won 49.35% of the vote, and Kilicdaroglu – 45%. For Erdogan to win, it was necessary to gain more than 50% of the vote, so the second round took place, the results of which were summed up by the Turkish Central Election Commission on May 28. Erdogan won with 52.14% of the vote against 47.86% in Kilicdaroglu.
