The publication Le Monde said that Paris is now considering the possibility of Ukraine joining the North Atlantic Alliance.
Official Paris decided to support Ukraine’s membership in NATO along the lines of Poland and the Baltic countries. This was said by the French edition of Le Monde.
The media said that at a recent meeting of the Defense Council at the Elysee Palace on June 12, the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO “as an independent guarantor of security” was considered.
“This could prevent Russia from continuing the war or, in the event of an end to hostilities, prevent any further aggression,” the newspaper’s journalists explained.
France believes that a hint at the prospect of Ukraine’s NATO membership could simultaneously convince President Volodymyr Zelensky to start negotiations with Russia when he decides the time is right.
The publication added that the change in France’s position means its approach to defensive positions in Central European countries, most of which (Poland and the Baltic countries) are strong supporters of Ukraine’s entry into NATO.
“France’s position is now closer to Poland’s than Germany’s,” a foreign diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to the newspaper.
Recall that the Secretary General of NATO previously said that Ukraine’s accession to NATO will not take place while the war continues, but that the path to future membership is open.
NATO members intend to offer Ukraine an updated format of relations to show support for its application for membership, but there has been no talk of concrete steps for Ukraine’s entry. to the alliance in the near future.
