The trigger for the discussion of this topic is the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. EU countries have already started buying air defense systems.
Ten European defense ministers will meet on Monday 19 June to discuss air defense. The meeting was organized by French Defense Minister Sebastian Lecorneau. Politico reports.
According to the French Ministry of Defense, the purpose of the meeting was to conduct a “strategic collective reflection” on the threats coming from the sky.
After expert discussions, French President Emmanuel Macron will give a speech at Les Invalides.
“Russia’s war against Ukraine has been an electric shock for many European countries that have discovered weaknesses in their own air defense systems and are now trying to invest in strengthening them,” the report said.
Many EU countries, led by Germany, who did not want to wait for the development of their own system in the EU, decided to buy finished products from the United States, Israel, and partly from Germany.
The publication notes that 16 countries, including Belgium, Poland, Estonia and Romania, have joined the German initiative called the European Sky Shield Initiative. Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Finland will not send their ministers to today’s meeting. However, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius will be replaced by his Secretary of State for Armaments, Benedikt Zimmer.
The event will be held as part of the Paris Air Show.
It was previously reported that the next meeting of Ukraine’s defense contact group in the Ramstein format will be devoted to strengthening its air defense.
