Among the issues that the US Secretary of State plans to discuss with Chinese politicians is the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine, in particular, curbing China’s military support for Russian forces.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Sunday, June 18, arrived on a two-day visit to Beijing. He became the first senior US diplomat to visit China in five years, Reuters reported.
Notably, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on this visit in November last year during a meeting in Indonesia at the G20 summit. Blinken was then said to be visiting China in February, but earlier that month a Chinese spy balloon was discovered over US territory and the Biden administration canceled the trip.
At the same time, Washington emphasized the need for high-level communication between the United States and China, which is especially important against the background of disagreements between them on various issues and growing geographic rivalry, especially in the Indo-Pacific region.
Therefore, one of the main goals of the trip, Blinken called the establishment of an open and powerful dialogue with Chinese officials to ensure that the competition between the two countries does not escalate into confrontation or armed conflict.
The Secretary of State also plans to discuss issues related to Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, in particular, Beijing’s so-called “peace proposals” and China’s restraint of military support for Russian forces.
At the same time, which of the Chinese leaders the Secretary of State plans to meet, the parties do not report. On the eve of the visit, some media, citing intelligent interlocutors, did not rule out Blinken’s talks with Xi Jinping.
At the same time, Washington does not expect Blinken’s trip to be a breakthrough in the complicated US-China relationship, but hopes that this visit will pave the way for intensifying communication between the two countries’ top officials throughout board.
It will be recalled that in May, China rejected the US request for a meeting between the heads of the defense departments of the two countries, Lloyd Austin and Li Shangfu, at the annual security forum in Singapore.
