Sweden will allow NATO to station troops on its territory before it formally joins the Alliance. This was announced on Friday, June 9, by the country’s Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Reuters wrote.
“The government has decided that the Swedish Armed Forces can start training in NATO countries to enable future joint operations,” said Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Defense Minister Paul Jonsson.
In a commentary in the Dagens Nyheter newspaper, they noted that the preparation could be the temporary deployment of foreign equipment and personnel in Sweden. Officials said the decision sends a clear message to Russia and strengthens Sweden’s defenses.
Russia, they say, will remain a threat to neighboring countries for the foreseeable future, and they are unsure of the extent of President Vladimir Putin’s territorial ambitions.
Recall that Sweden applied to join NATO with Finland on May 18, 2022. All alliance countries except Turkey and Hungary approved the protocol. In January 2023, a scandal broke out between Turkey and Sweden over the burning of the Koran at the Turkish embassy in Stockholm. Turkey says that after this and other anti-Turkish actions by Sweden, Ankara should not expect to support its application to join NATO.
Eventually, Finland joined the Alliance on its own.
Recently, the Swedish Supreme Court allowed the government to extradite a supporter of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party to Turkey – this is one of Ankara’s demands for the ratification of Sweden’s application for NATO membership.
