The suspension of gas supplies at one time caused damage to the Bulgarian economy and led to an increase in inflation.
Bulgaria’s Ministry of Energy is preparing an arbitration claim against Russian monopoly Gazprom for the suspension of gas supplies in April 2022 after Bulgaria refused to pay in Russian rubles. This was announced by the former head of the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy, Rossen Hristov, according to Euractiv.
Bulgaria and Poland have become the first EU member states to be hit by a cut in Russian gas supplies following Moscow’s refusal to pay for gas in rubles. Such a requirement is a violation of contracts that specify payment in dollars.
Over the past ten months, the interim government of pro-Russian President Rumen Radev has been publicly passive in demanding compensation for the suspension of Russian gas supplies, despite the fact that it has caused serious damage to Bulgarian economy and lead to inflation. Moreover, the Radev government tried to negotiate the continuation of supplies.
Hristov added that he tried to renew contact with Gazprom and asked to continue gas supplies, but the Russian company did not give a clear answer.
In March 2023, the Khristov administration announced that no decision had been made to file an arbitration claim against Gazprom, and that no steps had been taken to prepare an arbitration claim.
As previously reported, in April 2023, Turkey began supplying liquefied natural gas to Bulgaria.
