Importers’ activity in the last week of May somewhat stimulated the increase in pork purchase prices, but only slightly, the ACS said.
Ukraine in January-May 2023 imported 4.2 thousand tons of fresh, chilled and frozen pork meat. This is almost five times less than the same period last year. This was stated by the press service of the Ukrainian Svinary Association.
“The total amount of imported pork for five months is more than five times less than the same period in 2022 and 2.5 times less compared to last year: 4.2 thousand tons against 22.4 thousand tons and 10.3 thousand tons, respectively,” the association. said in a statement.
Customs statistics show that in May, the total receipt of fresh, chilled and frozen pork meat in Ukraine reached 603.5 tons (1.7 million US dollars in terms of foreign exchange).
ACS added that pork imports in May this year were ten times lower than in May last year.
The significant volatility of purchase prices in May – their increase at the end of the month – somewhat revived the activity of importers in the last week of the month. However, this did not have a significant impact on the market situation due to the insignificant amount of external receipts.
“The main deterrent is that prices continue to rise in the European pork market and, accordingly, in the import positions of the corresponding origin. Thus, the average price of a kilogram of pork imported in May reached at 2.82 US dollars against 2.4 US dollars in April and 1.88 US dollars in March,” ACS analysts added.
As already mentioned, the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs said that the prices for meat products in Ukraine increased before the spring holidays. However, their cost will begin to decrease in late spring.
