There is a direct threat to the further reproduction of sturgeon populations, which may lead to the disappearance of these relic species in the waters of Ukraine.
As a result of the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, the only state-owned sturgeon plant in Ukraine was flooded. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.
“This is a direct threat to the further reproduction of sturgeon populations, which could lead to the loss of these relic species in the water bodies of our state. Each year, the plant has provided the introduction of more than 1.5 million sturgeon fry ,” the report said.
The extent of the destruction and the amount of damage is still being established.
“Due to the special conservation status of the sturgeon species, the destruction of the sturgeon plant will have negative consequences for the ecological state of Ukraine and the countries of the Black Sea basin,” the ministry said.
The plant is located in Dneprovskoye, Belozersky district, Kherson region. It has been operating since 1984 and paid for the reproduction of the sturgeon fish species in Ukraine, which lost the possibility of natural reproduction due to the regulation of the Dnieper through a cascade of reservoirs.
The ministry also reported that the damage to the entire fishing industry from the death of adults alone could reach 95,000 tons, or about 4 billion UAH. In general, according to preliminary calculations, the damage from the death of all biological resources will reach UAH 10.5 billion.
Recall that on the night of June 6, the Russians blew up the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station.
As a result, the hydroelectric power plant was completely destroyed by the waves of the Kakhovka reservoir. Kherson OVA authorities have announced an immediate evacuation.
