We are talking about buying 1468 Stinger units from the manufacturer – Raytheon Technologies. There is no set deadline for the contract, but it is expected to take up to 30 months.
The U.S. military does not currently use Stinger missiles, but the army should have a minimum stockpile of these weapons as the next generation of portable air defense systems are developed.
Raytheon Technologies chief executive Greg Geis said in April that the Pentagon has not ordered from Stinger in the past 18 years. He then said it would take time to resume production to find replacements for weapon components that were no longer available.
Since February 2022, Ukraine has received approximately 1,400 Stingers, according to Reuters estimates.
It was previously reported that since the end of February, the United States has supplied Ukraine with nearly 24,000 tons of military equipment and ammunition. Heavy aircraft, both military and Pentagon charters, made 486 flights to Europe. In addition, 20 ships, 50 trains and 1.5 thousand trailers were involved.
