The US Patriot surface-to-air missile system is the only weapon that can shoot down some types of Russian missiles, so Ukraine needs more of these systems. This was said by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
According to him, Ukraine needs 50 Patriot batteries to protect against a Russian attack. Only then will the Russians lose the opportunity to terrorize millions of people.
“Today, the only weapon capable of stopping certain types of Russian missiles that it uses on our civilian population, schools, infrastructure, energy systems, the only system in the world is the Patriot. This war has taught the it’s mine,” said the president.
“The truth is as follows: 50 Patriot batteries – and most people will not die,” added the head of state.
According to open sources, there are about 60 Patriot batteries in the US for 2021. Ukraine has three Patriot batteries donated by the US, the Netherlands and Germany.
It was previously reported that Ukraine was discussing the possibility of creating a Patriot coalition with Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands. Also, countries that do not have such an air defense system can join the initiative.
The prime ministers of several European countries have promised “rapid” provision of Patriot systems to Ukraine.
