We are adequate people and we understand that not a single NATO country will be drawn into a war. Therefore, we understand that we will not be members of NATO while the war is going on. Not because we don’t want to, but because it’s impossible,” Zelensky was quoted as saying during a joint briefing with Estonian President Alar Karis in Kyiv on June 2 on the website of the President’s Office.
Zelensky assured that Ukraine is not looking for a replacement for NATO.
As I said: give me an example, which NATO country is at war with Russia, or in which NATO country are Russian troops now located? This indicates that these are the best security guarantees for Ukraine,” the head of state said.
At the same time, the president noted that Ukraine would not involve any of the countries of the Alliance in the war, therefore it perfectly understands that it will not become a member of NATO while the war with Russia is going on.
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, today the security guarantees for our state are sanctions, financial guarantees, weapons, and the like.
This is what today is not in documents, but in reality. And if we want to have guarantees on paper, then it should be clearly stated that these security guarantees are valid for Ukraine until the country receives the main security guarantees, namely NATO membership, the president emphasized.
Ukraine is a candidate for membership in NATO and the EU, but the West is afraid to set official terms of entry, as the war continues. Joining NATO means that Ukraine will distribute the fifth article on collective defense, which obliges the members of the alliance to defend the country in the event of an attack on it.
On the eve of Zelensky said at the summit of the European political community in Moldova that the doubts that European leaders will express before the admission of Kyiv to NATO will push Russia to attack more countries.
