RF reduces the ability to deter a counteroffensive – ISW

Analysts believe that the fact that Russia is primarily attacking Kyiv limits its own ability to counter-offensive actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Russian missile and drone attacks on Kyiv have become more frequent, but this has reduced the aggressor country’s ability to deter an expected counteroffensive by the Ukrainian Defense Forces. This is what experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in their report.

The Russian Federation launched another series of strikes on Ukraine using cruise missiles and Iranian-made drones on the night of May 28-29, as well as on the afternoon of May 29.

The Russians fired a greater number of missiles than in a recent series of strikes following the largest series of drone strikes since Russia began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on May 28.

ISW experts have noted that in recent months the Russian Federation has launched a new limited air campaign in an attempt to undermine Ukrainian counter-offensive capabilities.

But Russia’s prioritization of targeting Kiev likely further limits the campaign’s ability to significantly deter potential Ukrainian counteroffensives.

It can be recalled that the Office of the President noted that Ukraine is preparing the ground for a counter-offensive against Russian troops and that the intensity of the conflict is growing.

Earlier, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhny raised expectations that a major military operation could be imminent, saying on social media: “The time has come for Ukraine to start the reclaiming itself.”
