The main task of the F-16 fighters in Ukraine is to gain an advantage in the air and cover the territory where Ukrainian ground-based air defense systems do not reach.

Now the aviation of the aggressor country of Russia is dominated by Ukrainian in terms of quantity and technology. And modern Western fighters will make it possible to block regions where there are gaps. Ground-based air defense systems will cover strategic directions, important facilities, and cities. And then mobile groups and F-16s will work. Yuriy Ignat, the speaker of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, announced this on the air of the telethon on May 24.
He stressed that fighters will not be able to work against ballistic missiles, because Patriot and Samp-T air defense systems are needed here. However, the planes will protect the airspace of Ukraine from cruise missiles like Kh-101, Kalibr and Shahed-type kamikaze drones.
He will do it efficiently. It will also gain advantage in the air, because today Russian aviation surpasses us in numbers and technologies, Ignat noted.
According to him, air superiority in the occupied territories is indeed a key issue that will make it possible to successfully conduct both offensive and defensive operations.
Meanwhile, NRK reported that Norwegian Defense Minister Bern Arild Gram announced that the Norwegian government would support the training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets.
Recall, on May 23, US Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said that the delivery of F-16 fighters to Ukraine would take “several months at best.” He sees this as a good development, as even an advanced training course for an F-16 pilot could take up to five months.
