The corresponding decision today, May 24, was supported at a meeting of the Bishops’ Council in the Refectory Church of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, in which more than 50 bishops took part, BBC Ukraine reports.
One bishop voted against the transition, while another abstained.
The transition will take place on September 1st. Thus, the dates of a number of holidays will shift by 13 days – the WTO will now celebrate Christmas on December 25, Epiphany on January 6, and Nicholas on December 6. In addition, the Feast of the Intercession, which was associated with the selection of the date of the Defender of Ukraine Day, is postponed from October 14 to October 1.
At the same time, changes in the calendar will not apply to Easter and Trinity.
Formally, the transition to the new calendar must be approved by the local council of the church on July 27, 2023 with the participation of the laity. However, as the head of the WTO, Metropolitan Epiphanius and a number of other bishops, said, this issue has already been resolved and the transition will take place from September 1.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church decided to switch to the new calendar.
