The Security Council and the Bretton Woods agreements reflect the relations of forces of 1945 and now need to be updated. It’s time to change the Security Council to fit the “realities of the modern world.” This was announced by UN Secretary General António Guterres at the G7 summit in Japan, the press service of the organization reports.
The Secretary General acknowledged that in the face of the economic turmoil from the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Security Council has failed to fulfill its core function as a global security net.
The global financial architecture is outdated, dysfunctional and unfair, he said.
As you know, the UN Security Council was complained about because of the right of veto, which is often used by the aggressor country, the Russian Federation. Ukraine and the European Parliament have repeatedly called for Russia to be excluded from the Security Council.
Recall that in April the aggressor country of the Russians presided over the UN Security Council. Kyiv declared that this event was not only the final evidence of the complete bankruptcy of the UN Security Council, but also the verdict on the entire modern architecture of international security.
