The historic vote took place on Wednesday, May 17th. The resolution adopted by the parliamentarians calls on the French government to officially recognize “the famine, deportation and extermination, methodically organized by the Soviet government against millions of Ukrainians in 1932 and 1933, as genocide.” This was reported on the web page of the French Parliament.
The senators also called on the government to publicly condemn the genocide committed by the Soviet authorities against the Ukrainian rural population in 1932 and 1933.
Ukraine has already reacted to the historic decision of the French parliamentarians. In particular, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk thanked his colleagues for adopting the resolution.
With this historically important decision, France joins the coalition of states condemning the actions of the totalitarian regime and the destruction of Ukrainians. Such crimes must not be repeated,” he wrote on Twitter.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba also thanked the French senators on Twitter. He stressed that this vote restores justice and honors the memory of millions of victims. The diplomat also added that such crimes should never be repeated and never be forgotten.
Recall that on March 28, the National Assembly of France, the lower house of the French parliament, adopted a resolution in which it recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people. The document was supported by a majority of 168 votes.
