The State Department has not ruled out identifying the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism

Recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism would lead to Moscow’s international isolation and prevent China from helping Putin.

The US State Department does not rule out recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism for crimes committed during the invasion of Ukraine. This is what Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a hearing at the US Senate Committee on China, CNN reports.

When asked by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham whether the State Department had made up its mind and would never recognize Russia as a sponsor of terrorism, Blinken replied: “Never say never.”

Graham insisted on the need to declare Russia a state sponsor of terrorism.

“We all want China not to help Russia here, right? There’s an idea. 100 US senators have suggested that we declare Russia a state sponsor of terrorism to keep countries like China from giving them weapons,” said Graham.

In turn, Blinken noted that, in his opinion, the imposed sanctions and the powers that the United States has, have been able to prevent Beijing from military assistance to Moscow.

It should be noted that recognizing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism will lead to Moscow’s international isolation and will force the US to impose additional restrictions on countries dealing with the Kremlin. The State Department has the authority to determine such status.

Recall that a bill recognizing the Russian Federation as a sponsor of terrorism was submitted to the US Congress in September 2022. However, Washington considers such a step counterproductive.
