Maros Sefcovic noted that 25 major gas suppliers and more than 110 companies took part in this tender.
Ukraine received 100% of the gas volume as part of its participation in the EU Platform for Joint Gas Purchases. This was said by the Vice-President of the European Commission Maros Sefcovic in Brussels on Tuesday, May 16, summarizing the results of the first tender for the collective purchase of gas, reports Ukrinform.
“In Ukraine and Moldova, respectively, 100 percent and 80 percent of the ordered volumes in gas supplies were fulfilled. This was achieved thanks to the instrument (EU Gas Platform, – ed.), which did not exist five months ago,” he said.
According to him, the market reaction to the first tender announced by the European Commission for the general purchase of gas was positive. The tender was attended by 25 major gas suppliers and more than 110 companies interested in its consumption, and these quantitative indicators continue to grow due to high interest from both sides.
“The combination of demand from several EU countries is the right decision to take advantage of the strong purchasing power of the EU and work successfully to fill the gas storage facilities in Europe before next winter. a total purchase volume of 10.9 billion cubic meters of gas was achieved, of which LNG is approximately 20 percent, and the remaining 80 percent is covered by pipeline gas,” said Sefcovic.
The official added that next Monday he intends to hold a virtual meeting of the EU Gas Purchase Platform.
In the second half of June, the European Commission intends to carry out the second round of a tender to meet the aggregate demand of European consumers for gas. Three more such rounds will be held before the end of the current year.
“Despite this positive news… we must not lose our caution. We still have a war going on in Ukraine, we must also remember the difficult lessons of last year… We will continue to engage with all reliable supplier worldwide to be well prepared for next winter,” the vice-president of the European Commission summed up.
As we wrote earlier, the European Union has launched a joint purchase of gas.
