This was announced on May 16 by NSDC Secretary Alexei Danilov.
PACE must clearly understand that we have our own Constitution and the laws of our country, by which we must live. When such a state exists in which we are today, there can be no presidential or parliamentary elections. Point, – he said on the air of the telethon.
This statement by Danilov was a reaction to the words of the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Tiny Cox. In an interview with European Pravda, he insisted on the need to hold parliamentary and presidential elections, even under martial law.
In his opinion, this is a difficult challenge, because the Constitution does not allow elections to be held under martial law. But the authorities must find a solution.
It is not our question to indicate how to do this, but, of course, Ukraine must organize free and fair elections. For this is your obligation under the statute of the Council of Europe. And, of course, you will do it,” he stressed.
According to the PACE President, the allies have no claims against Ukraine if the elections are “not ideal.” But if they don’t, “everyone will have questions, because democracy is impossible without elections.”
Earlier, President Zelensky allowed the abolition of the next parliamentary elections if martial law was in force in Ukraine by that time. Zelensky announced this on May 14 during a press conference in Berlin.
If there is no martial law, then there will be. Well, the law says that according to the Constitution of Ukraine, after the end of martial law, I think elections are held in 90 days,” the head of state stressed.
The next elections to the Verkhovna Rada are scheduled to take place on October 29, 2023.
