This was the first personal meeting between the Ukrainian leader and the pontiff since the beginning of a full-scale war between Ukraine and Russia. The head of state told Francis about Russian crimes in Ukraine. Zelensky announced this on May 13 in Telegram.
The Head of State told the Pope of Rome about the Ukrainian formula for peace and invited him to join its implementation. They also talked about forcibly deported Ukrainian children, who were taken to Russia by the invaders.
Grateful for his personal attention to the tragedy of millions of Ukrainians. He also noted tens of thousands of deported children. We must make every effort to return them home.
According to the Italian edition of La Repubblica, Zelensky and the Pope talked for 40 minutes. The pontiff presented the Ukrainian president with a small sculpture in the form of an olive branch, a symbol of peace. And Zelensky gave the Pope an icon of the Madonna painted on the remains of a bulletproof vest.
Recall that President Volodymyr Zelensky is in Italy on a working visit. In Rome, he met with Italian Prime Minister Georgia Maloney, after which he stated that “there are very important decisions to protect our skies.”
