According to Reuters on May 10, citing an unnamed diplomat, negotiations between EU ambassadors will be difficult, as some countries consider the sanctions too lenient, while others fear damaging their international ties.
Several diplomats said the very different viewpoints meant no agreement was expected soon.
EU chief executive Ursula von der Leyen unveiled the plan during a symbolic trip to Kiev on Tuesday, May 9, in contrast to Moscow’s annual celebration of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, which President Vladimir Putin likens to his invasion of Ukraine.
A new package of EU sanctions could hit Russia’s shady oil-trading tanker fleet. The project of the European Commission provides for a ban on entering European ports for ships that hide the country of origin of the cargo without good reason.
The document also proposes to expand the list of goods prohibited for export to Russia and allow EU countries to restrict the sale of certain goods to companies and countries that help the aggressor circumvent sanctions.
It also provides for the easing of restrictions on the sale of assets by Western companies cooperating with entities that have fallen under the sanctions.
Other proposals by the EC include sanctions against Iranian companies involved in the production and supply of drones to Russia.
