German authorities in Poland promised to move tanks to replace those sent by Warsaw to Ukraine, but did not do so. A new scandal is brewing in German politics.
The German government has not kept its promise to provide Poland Leopard tanks to replace those it provided to Ukraine. This was stated by the President of Poland Andrzej Duda, report on Tuesday, May 24, Die Welt.
“The government has not kept its promise. And, frankly, we are very disappointed because of it. We have given Ukraine a lot of tanks, because we believe it is our responsibility as a neighbor,” Duda said.
He stressed that since Poland has provided its tanks to Ukraine, it has relied on the support of NATO, the United States and Germany.
“Most of our tank arsenal in the Polish armed forces consists of German Leopard -type tanks. If Germany supports us, if we receive a replacement, we will be very happy,” the Polish President said.
According to him, such a promise was made, but not fulfilled.
He also stressed that the German government is doing too little to help Ukraine.
“First of all, Germany itself must help Ukraine. Ukraine really needs this help very urgently,” Duda said.
The publication states that the leader of the opposition CDU party, Friedrich Merz, has sought immediate explanations from the federal government as to why the promises made to Poland regarding the exchange of tanks have not been fulfilled.
Earlier, the media reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had been blocking the supply of Marder infantry fighting vehicles in Ukraine for more than a month.
It will be recalled that in April, Scholz was threatened with resignation for refusing to supply heavy weapons to Ukraine.
